Provenance

Presented to Bartholomew Schitt and Prudence Mercy Schitt upon their marriage in 1868, the Schitt Family Bible served for generations as the family’s principal record of births, marriages, and deaths.

Unlike many county records—which were occasionally misplaced, damaged, or otherwise rendered unavailable—the Bible remained in family possession and became one of the most reliable surviving records documenting the Schitt family lineage.

Following its preservation by later generations, the Bible was ultimately transferred to the Crock O. Schitt Historical Archives, where it was digitized to ensure its continued preservation for future generations.

Crock’s Register

Held in the permanent collection of the Crock O. Schitt Historical Archives.

Curator’s Note: While every effort has been made to preserve the original entries exactly as recorded, spelling, handwriting, dates, and occasional family disagreements have been retained in their original form. Any errors are therefore considered historically authentic.

Archivist’s Note:
Several additional register leaves were found folded beneath the rear lining of the Bible during preservation work. They appear to contain entries spanning multiple generations.

Besides… some folks in this family couldn’t spell “Schitt” the same way twice.
