The Earliest Surviving Family Entries

Among the earliest entries preserved in the Schitt Family Bible are those of Boris Schitt and Maggie Schitt, together with their children Mary and Isaac. The entries record family dates extending from Boris’s birth in 1591 through Isaac’s estimated death around 1680.

The precise date these earliest records were entered into the surviving volume remains undetermined. Differences in ink, handwriting, and aging suggest that some information may have been entered or recopied at different times as the Bible passed through successive generations.

Whatever its precise origin, this page represents the earliest surviving family record presently associated with the Schitt Family Bible.

Family tradition says these are some of the oldest Schitt records anybody’s managed to hang onto. Exactly who first wrote ’em down remains a matter of discussion. Several relatives claim to know. None were there.
